Robby and Steph's Story

 Diamond Nexus loves to post stories from happy couples who are eager to start their new lives together! This one in particular made us all smile, as Robby and Steph tell their story. We can all imagine that it is tricky to juggle the challenges of a long distance relationship, Steph being in college and Robby's duties in the Air Force, but we know they will do great and we wish them a lifetime of happiness together! From all of us here at Diamond Nexus, thank you both so much for sharing this with all of us!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We met at the Houston Zoo, on a biology class field trip through a
mutual friend. She was a freshman, I was a junior.Whenever we saw each other in the hallway we would say hi, but we didn't ever have full on convos until the following year, when she was a sophomore and I was a senior. We both had huge crushes on each other, but neither of us said a thing about our feelings. We had a good friendship going and we didn't want to ruin it or be rejected.
 Every time we saw each other, I would say, "MY asian!" and we would give each other a hug. We would also look forward to the times when we were waiting after school for our rides home. It was the only time we got to sit down and talk together.
I ended up graduating and went off to basic training for the Air Force. We didn't lose contact, but it did die down a bit after that. We still didn't know we liked each other, but we were still hesitant to
let the other one know... the distance seemed so daunting.
I would visit randomly and we would always meet up somehow. Her parents didn't like me much at first, and she had to covertly plan dates with me, which I wasn't aware of until she told me a couple months ago.
We had our first kiss in the parking lot of Panera bread while several cars were waiting for us to hurry it up.It was then we realized we had strong feelings for each other. I went ahead and sealed the deal, and we decided to date despite the distance. We figured we would last.
After about a year, she had told me that I was her first love, and I started thinking about what would happen in the future then. What would happen if she started thinking, "Is this it?.. I haven't experienced life, I havent lived." I didn't want that to happen, so I ended the relationship.
I didn't tell her my reasoning for it, and I admit, it was a stupid move, I just didn't want her second guessing if she didn't know who else and what else was out there. After several months we got back together. She was hesitant at first, for I had broken her heart by doing what I did. Her roommate had to convince her to go out with me after a date we had. She was confused but knew her love for me was so strong that we couldn't live without each other in our lives.
Once we got back together, we reconnected exactly where we had left off, and we knew we were made for each other. I explained why I broke the relationship off after a couple months, and we talked everything through. Afterwards I went back to base, and we made the distance work again. I came to visit about every month, and each time I had to go back home it was harder to leave.
Her parents decided to warm up to me, and we actually get along really well now. I call them mom and dad and they call me their son. I went down to visit her with one intent: to get her parents permission to ask for her hand in marriage. We had several talks and ultimately I was given their blessing.
I proposed to her privately and she had said yes; it was with a temporary ring, and we had planned to keep it secret. That didn't last long; because we were too excited about being engaged, we kind of told everyone we saw.. even random people we didn't know. Everyone was extremely supportive of us.
We wanted to set the date immediately, but we decided it was in our best interest to wait for her to finish college. Our date is now set for May 24, 2014. It's a long way off, and we're still fighting the distance, but it will be well worth it. When Steph came down to visit me, one of my good friends had offered to take professional photos of us.
We quickly took her up on the offer and went out for the photo shoot. She asked to see the ring and since it was a temporary ring, we had quickly let her know that it was such. She then started telling us about Diamond Nexus, and how amazing their affordable engagement rings are.
We took a look, and we were actually quite surprised. We fell in love with one, but it is no longer available. They have a standard colored one that we actually like much better called The Whitney. Same styling, but with no additional colors.
Once I receive the ring, I plan on proposing publicly and surprising her. We can't wait for her to show off her new ring and for everyone to know we belong together.
