Tips to find an affordable wedding photo or videographer

A great wedding day will create memories that last a life time.  However, it helps to supplement those memories with some amazing photos and video that you can cherish forever.  Unfortunately, good photography or film does not come cheap!  If you’re trying to create a wedding on a budget, here are some tips to help:

Power to the people: Although most of us aren’t trained and practiced at taking amazing photography, you would be amazed at the quality of photographs the average person can take!  Don’t rely on just one of your friends to snap a couple of pics though; ask everyone at the wedding to take turns documenting the momentous occasion.  There may be some duds amongst the group but there may also be some budding artists!

Make a trade: The people that capture the moments of our weddings have the same wants and needs as the rest of us.  Think about if there is anything that you can trade with someone so you can get a great photographer without the great photographer price tag.  This can be a service that you offer as part of your job (haircuts, taxes) or something you no longer need (treadmill, TV).  Even if you cannot do a straight trade of services, it can still save you substantial amounts of money!

Hire an intern: This may seem like a crazy idea to a lot of people but there are plenty of students out there looking for work experience.  Go to your local universities and colleges and see if you can find some students that are looking to bolster their portfolios.  Just make sure you check out their work before you agree to let them shoot your special day!

Search high and low: Sometimes finding an affordable photographer or videographer simply comes down to persistence.  Don’t just look through Google searches or the wedding websites.  Delve into classified sites like Craigslist, search local coupon sites and join coupon mailing lists like Groupon.  Although this may take the longest to find a photographer, it is a great way to save some major change!
