The average American produces over 1600 pounds of garbage every single year. This massive amount of trash puts a major strain on our environment and requires millions of gallons of gas to move our trash. To help you do your part, we came up with a few tips to help reduce your garbage burden:
Get the right bag: It takes a long, long time for the average garbage bag to decompose in a landfill. Luckily though, there are numerous trash bags available that will not harm the environment so much. Besides looking for biodegradable bags, you can also consider using the bags that grocery and clothing stores hand out on a daily basis. Instead of throwing them away, turn them into your trash bags and save the environment from the garbage bags you were going to buy.
Look at the packaging: Reducing your garbage impact can start when you’re shopping. Looking for packaging that is either recyclable or biodegradable can make a big difference when it comes time to throw it away. Make sure anything that you plan to recycle can be collected by your city.
Buy reusable: While you’re shopping, you should also be looking for products that allow you to reduce your waste. There are a lot of reusable products that can replace items you normally throw away, such as batteries, coffee filters, water bottles and so forth. Replacing these items with reusable alternatives can have a huge positive impact.
Start composting: The average household throws away 474 pounds of food scraps per year. By composting these scraps instead of throwing them in the trash, you can have a major positive impact on the environment. Before you start a program, make sure your local municipality allows food composts (some don’t!) and make sure you know what items can or cannot be composted.
