Each month most of us pay our utility bill and think little about what we can do to reduce it, other than turn down the heat. As it turns out, there is actually a lot we can do to not only reduce our utility bill, but also help reduce our burden on the environment. Here are some quick tips to get you started:
Seal leaks: The leaks around windows and doors are the easiest to find but make sure to also check your attic, basement and crawl space. Go through the house a couple of times and when you find a leak, seal it with chalk, spray foam or weather stripping.
Add insulation: Although most of us think of insulation as only keeping heat in, it is also important for keeping our house cool! Insulation is measured by R-Value: the ability to retain heat. Make sure you check your walls, attic, basement and crawlspaces to ensure they have the proper R-Value.
Seal ducts: A normal house with forced air heating and cooling loses about 20% of its air due to leaks and poor sealing. Make sure you check all exposed ducts for proper sealing and should you have new ducts installed, ensure the contractor uses properly sealed ducts.
Change your air filter: You should check your filter every month to make sure that it looks clean. If it ever does not look clean then replace it but make sure you replace it at least every three months. This will keep your system running efficiently for longer.
Program your thermostat: If you’re away from home for set periods of time, such as work or school, it makes sense to invest in a programmable thermostat. They will save you money and not force you to have to think about raising and lowering the thermostat every time you walk through the door.
Go new: Current Energy Star certified appliances are already 40% more effective than their 2001 counter parts. Upgrading to new appliances could actually save you money down the road and will most definitely lessen your impact on the environment.
Although we are all tight for time, spending just a few hours of your week working to implement these changes can have a big impact on your utility bill! And remember, as you’re helping yourself, you’re helping the environment!
Why are you posting this type of information? I want jewelry info., not unrelated stuff posted to Facebook. Thanks.
