Diamond Nexus Labs on BlogTalkRadio!

Just before Valentine’s weekend, Diamond Nexus Labs was featured in a segment of the weekly internet talk radio show Fashion/Beauty & the Beast of an Economy on BlogTalkRadio. Show host Hillary interviewed our retail location manager Brianne in a special Valentine’s themed show about romantic gifts available in the Milwaukee area. Although Valentine’s Day is now past, this two-hour episode has lots of fabulous ideas for spoiling that special-someone, all while supporting local businesses. Also, you can hear Brianne’s exciting radio announcement of our new Miss Universe sponsorship.

Click on the image above to hear this fun and informative episode. The Diamond Nexus Labs segment is last in the line-up, so you can either listen to the whole show at your leisure or click near the end of the timeline bar (circled) to skip ahead. (If you click just before the volume control bars, it should get you pretty close.)

Changing How We See “Bling”

For the past hundred years, the entertainment industry has always set the standards for decadence. It’s somewhat expected by now that the wealthiest among us should also find the most extravagant ways to spend that wealth. However, recent trends indicate that – dare we say it? – the red carpet elite may actually be coming down to Earth.

The precedent was set in 2002 when Julia Roberts – the woman with the million dollar smile – proudly donned an engagement ring that cost $3,750, as opposed to the traditional celebrity engagement ring that may cost a hundred times as much or even more. With her fifth anniversary coming up in July, her marriage has already outlasted those of countless other stars. Furthermore, the 2009 Grammy Awards featured several prolific rappers, once widely known for sporting jewelry collections that could fund a small country, now arrayed with pieces that reflect quality versus quantity. Amy Andrieux, senior editor at The Source magazine, says: “We just came out of the ‘bling era,’ where everything was about wealth and what you could attain, and I'm starting to see [hip hop] artists being more socially conscious.” This mature handling of style and success is catching on, signaling a new era not only in fashion and jewelry, but in many other dynamics of our lives as well.

In short, the world is in the midst of a major, much-needed mental shift. The social belief that the price tag of our possessions determines the quality of our lives is rapidly giving way to a more rational, practical viewpoint: the “good life” is not the same thing as the “expensive life.” Whereas we were once obsessed with measuring our personal value according to how much we spend, regardless of whether or not it was worth the price, we are now growing out of this financial adolescence and blossoming into economic adulthood with the realization that cost is no substitute for taste.
